The figure of Giulio Romano, pseudonym of Giulio Pippi de’ Jannuzzi (Rome, 1492 or 1499 - Mantua, 1546), the most talented of Raphael's students, will be celebrated by an important event scheduled at the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
The exhibition “With a New and Extravagant Manner”. Giulio Romano in Mantua will run from 6 October 2019 to 6 January 2020. Stemming from the collaboration between the Palazzo Ducale Museum Complex in Mantua and the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the exhibition intends to illustrate the figure of Giulio Romano and his “new manner” of making art, especially in the city of the Gonzagas, highlighting its distinctive features and highly innovative aspects.
The project developed by the scholarly committee – consisting of Peter Assmann, Laura Angelucci, Paolo Bertelli, Renato Berzaghi, Paolo Carpeggiani, Sylvia Ferino, Augusto Morari, Roberta Serra and Luisa Onesta Tamassia – with the involvement of the Département des Arts Graphiques of the Musée du Louvre, which will retrace the professional career of Giulio Romano fully and coherently from his beginnings in Rome to his long and intense activity in Mantua, so bringing out the multiplicity of his interests.
His many-sided genius found expression in extremely varied artistic forms and disciplines, from architecture to painting, tapestry and jewelry, with their common denominator in the practice of drawing, in which Giulio had excelled since his formative years in Raphael’s workshop.
Alongside the works in the Louvre, the exhibition will offer a further rich selection of drawings from the most important Italian and foreign museum collections (including the Albertina in Vienna, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle), together with paintings, prints and maiolica.
The most recent digital technologies will also be used to recreate objects and settings associated with Giulio Romano through 3D reconstructions.
The exhibition will be divided into three sections exploring different aspects of Giulio Romano's work, highlighting the "new and extravagant manner" of his art, as described by Giorgio Vasari in the Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and Architects.
