This is an augmented reality app of the latest generation and in continuous evolution (the multimedia and augmented reality content will be progressively updated). It enables you to discover, understand and always remain connected with Palazzo Te.
The app, available from Google Play and App Store, allows you to interact with the museum even from your home, sitting comfortably on your sofa. A channel is open to the public presenting useful information and a news section. To date, four augmented reality points have been designed to tell you about the interiors of Palazzo Te and the routes that lead through the building.
Augmented reality will be available in four rooms of the building as part of a project that can be extended with time.
We begin with the Chamber of Titian, then move on to the Chamber of Emblems, the Chamber of Horses and the Chamber of Cupid and Psyche.
Chamber of Titian
By focusing your device on the model (which reconstructs the building as it appears today) you can activate various insights and an analysis in depth:
Chamber of Emblems
After a technical and thematic introduction, you will be able to use the camera in your own device to discover the emblems painted on the walls, their history and special meanings. In this way you will discover the significance of the Salamander, Mount Olympus, the Grove and other emblems that Federico II Gonzaga chose to represent himself.
Chamber of the Horses
This wonderful room connects the interior and exterior of the building. By focusing on its walls, you will be able to access a wide range of information exploring it in depth.
You will discover the illusionary painted architecture, the Corinthian pilasters and the large painted windows opening onto imaginary landscapes. You will learn about the importance of the Gonzaga breed of horses raised on the island of Tejeto where the palace stands.
Chamber of Cupid and Psyche
A virtual route will guide visitors to discover the decorations of the room. You will be able to reconstruct the story of Cupid and Psyche painted on the vault in oils and on the walls in fresco. By doing this you can identify the protagonists of the pictorial cycle, their stories and loves and the literary sources.
All this has been made possible by a careful and meticulous work of study conducted by Visivalab under the scholarly guidance of the Palazzo Te Foundation.
More than 30 people have worked to create the multimedia products.
The spaces of the palace have been reproduced in high definition with over 7000 photographs using cutting-edge systems to faithfully reproduce the colors and bring out their splendor and power.
After careful study of the historical records and experience in applying the latest technologies to the cultural heritage, we decided to offer the public a virtual reality point to enable visitors to travel with Giulio Romano through the history of the palace..
In post-production, the images of all the spaces were processed, divided by layers and through motion graphics. This has restored life and volume to Giulio Romano's drawings.
To give an example, the fresco depicting the Chamber of Ovid in Palazzo Te was processed as an immersive 360° image, preserving its texture and the artist’s brushstrokes and respecting the historical-artistic documentation. This will enable users to enter the painting and feel they are part of the landscape depicting boats, figures and trees moved by the wind. In the Chamber of the Giants, similar work has been done to bring to light the frescoes on the walls. Zeus hurling thunderbolts from Olympus has been imitated and redrawn in every single frame, reproducing the original drawings and colors. The history and the essence of Giulio Romano's fresco come to life in skillfully developed video clip lasting about 20 seconds, redrawing the 600 scenes one by one.
Then in post-production everything was processed and animated, as in Pixar’s great masterpieces, to create a sense of total immersion in the awesome and tragic scene of the fall of the Giants.
Virtual reality technology will enable visitors to see Giulio Romano's original project by studying his drawings. The 3D processing of maps and plans reveals Palazzo Te as it appeared to visitors in the past, before people, history and time altered its structure and the landscape of its island setting.
Then, for the first time in heritage projects, virtual reality will be accompanied by 360° sound effects so as to completely immerse visitors and waft them through time, into sounds and space to discover this marvel that is Palazzo Te.
